FAQ

What veins can be treated?

Veins that are visible to the naked eye are readily treated with the xeo® laser. Such veins are:

Spider Angioma – a small red spot with extending vessels also known as spider nevi or “spiderveins”.

Capillary hemangioma – Also known as a “strawberry birthmark”.

Venous lakes – A dark mark or papule, that are often found on the borders of the lips, face and ears that have had repeated sun exposure.

Clients with varicose veins unfortunately are not good candidates for laser vein treatment.

How does laser vein treatment work?

It is scientific fact that dark colours attract and absorb light. When a vein becomes broken, the hemoglobin from the blood of the vein is collected together and becomes oxygenated – which causes the darker colour. The light from the laser is then attracted to the dark colour of the vein and becomes hot. This in turn damages the vessel walls which results in vasoconstriction and closure (death) of the vessel.

Is it painful?

As pain tolerance varies from person to person, it is hard to put a pain scale on a treatment. The best way to explain the sensation is like a snapping of an elastic band against your skin with added heat. We provide an ice pack to slightly numb the area before the laser treatment which then makes the pain much more tolerable to those who are a little more sensitive. If you are worried about the discomfort during your treatment, it helps to take Advil or Tylenol about 20 minutes before your appointment to reduce discomfort.

Will I need more than one treatment?

This depends on the person as well as the size and type of the vein. The veins will noticeably fade with one treatment but may require additional treatments for permanent results. We provide complimentary consultations to address your concerns and discuss your treatment plan. While our goal is to destroy the veins in the first treatment, some veins may only become damaged and not completely close making a follow up treatment necessary.

Can I tan before Laser Vein treatment?

It is recommended to avoid tanning and self tanners 4 weeks prior to your laser vein treatment. Pigment in the skin picks up the laser energy and heats the skin therefore the lighter the surrounding skin of the vein is, the more beneficial the treatment.
